Which Barcode Type Should You Use?

• Code 128 is the safe default for almost everything: inventory tags, shipping labels, employee badges, asset tracking. It handles letters, numbers, and common symbols, and it is compact. Keep values under 30 characters for reliable scanner reads.
• Code 39 is common in U.S. defense, government, automotive, and industrial settings. It accepts uppercase letters, digits, and a few symbols (- . $ / + % and space). Lowercase input is converted to uppercase automatically. Unless your legacy system requires it, Code 128 is more efficient.
• UPC-A is the standard for North American retail: grocery stores, pharmacies, big-box stores. Enter 11 digits and the 12th (check) digit is calculated for you.
• EAN-13 is the global retail standard, and it is also the format used for book ISBN-13 codes (numbers starting with 978 or 979). Enter 12 digits and the 13th (check) digit is added for you.
• EAN-8 is a short version of EAN-13 for small products where a full-size barcode will not fit, such as cosmetics tubes, pens, or small packets. Enter 7 digits and the 8th is added for you.
• UPC-E is a compact version of UPC-A, also used on small North American retail packages. Enter the 6 middle digits and the check digit is added, or enter a full, valid 8-digit UPC-E code.
• ITF-14 is the barcode for cartons, cases, and shipping boxes that hold retail items. Enter 13 digits and the 14th is added for you.
• Codabar is an older format still found in libraries, blood banks, and some shipping and lab systems. Use digits and - $ : . / +, optionally wrapped in start/stop letters A-D (for example A1234B).
• QR Code (Text/URL) works for anything you want people to scan with a phone: product pages, event check-ins, menus, portfolio links, contact info.
• QR Code (Wi-Fi) is underrated for cafés, hotels, and offices. Guests connect without typing a password, and the network name (and optionally the password) prints below the code so staff can verify it at a glance.

When in doubt, start with Code 128.

Selling on Amazon or in retail stores? UPC and EAN numbers are assigned through GS1. This tool creates the barcode image for a number you already own; it does not register or issue product numbers. Buy or license your numbers from GS1 (or your marketplace’s approved source) first, then generate the images here.

💡 Skip the check-digit math

You never need to calculate check digits yourself. Just prepare:

• EAN-13: 12 digits per item (the 13th is added automatically)
• UPC-A: 11 digits per item (the 12th is added automatically)
• EAN-8: 7 digits per item (the 8th is added automatically)
• ITF-14: 13 digits per item (the 14th is added automatically)

If you paste a full-length number (13 digits for EAN-13, for example) with a wrong last digit, the tool corrects it and tells you how many values were fixed. For example, 590123412345 becomes 5901234123457.

Tip: set your Excel column format to Text so leading zeros don’t disappear.

Getting the Most Out of Sequence and Bulk Mode

• Sequence mode is the fastest option for numbered barcodes. Set a prefix (like SHELF-), a start and end number, a step, and zero-padding, and the full set generates instantly. SHELF-001 through SHELF-100 takes a few seconds. You can also add a suffix (for example -US).
• Numeric types (EAN, UPC, ITF-14) handle padding for you. Enter the digits that stay the same as the prefix, and the counter fills the rest up to the required length, with the check digit added at the end. Example for EAN-13: prefix 5901234 with start 1 gives 5901234 00001 (12 digits), then the 13th digit is added automatically. Example for UPC-A: prefix 012345 gives 012345 00001 (11 digits), then the 12th is added.
• Bulk mode lets you upload a CSV/TXT file or paste a list of codes, one per line. For CSV files only the first column is used, a header row such as “code” or “SKU” is skipped automatically, and text encoding (UTF-8 or Excel’s legacy encodings) is detected for you.
• Values that can’t be encoded are flagged in the preview with an explanation, and skipped on download so one bad row never blocks the rest.

A Note on Print Quality

For most internal use (warehouse bins, asset tags, storage labels), a standard inkjet or laser printer on label paper works fine. If your barcodes need to scan reliably under heavy use or at high speed, a thermal label printer gives sharper, smear-proof output and is cheaper per label at volume.
