Which Barcode Type Should You Use?

• Code 128 is the safe default for almost everything — inventory tags, shipping labels, employee badges, asset tracking. It handles letters, numbers, and special characters. Keep values under 30 characters for reliable scanner reads.
• Code 39 is common in U.S. defense, government, and industrial settings. If your legacy system requires it, you’ll see it called out in your documentation. Otherwise, Code 128 is more compact and efficient.
• UPC-A is the standard for North American retail — grocery stores, pharmacies, big box stores. Enter 11 digits, and the final check digit (the 12th digit) is calculated automatically for you.
  • Pro Tip for Bulk Generation: If you are generating a sequence, enter your 11-digit base code and set the sequence logic to fill the remaining digits.
